I switched from PVA to wheat paste on my last 20 books and the spines tell the story
I bound 20 copies of a local history book in my garage in Boise over the past couple weeks, half with PVA and half with wheat paste, and the difference in how the spines opened was clear right away. The wheat paste copies laid flat at chapter breaks without me forcing them, while the PVA ones fought back and cracked at the hinge on two of them. The paste takes way longer to dry, plus you have to mix it fresh and it can mold if you're sloppy, so I get why people stick with PVA for speed. But for books that need to open soft, I'm not sure I can go back. Anyone here made the full switch, or do you keep both on the bench for different jobs?
cracked at the hinge on two of them" says it all. PVA is fine when you need speed but it can't flex like paste. Keep both on the bench, no reason to pick just one.
