I used to hate grain direction in book cloth until I messed up 15 covers in a row
I always thought grain direction was just something the old timers obsessed over for no reason. Then last month I cut a whole batch of covers the wrong way and every single one warped like a potato chip after 2 days in the press. Now I check every roll before I even lay a ruler on it. Has anyone else had that moment where you finally understood why a rule exists?

Wait, 15 covers in a row? That's brutal. I would have thrown the whole roll out the window after 5. Had a similar thing with flimsy cloth once, thought I could just power through the grain and it came out looking like wrinkled bacon. Now I obsessively mark the grain direction with a pencil before even pulling the cloth out of storage.

Isn't it wild how we have to learn everything the hard way? It's like how I used to think warming up your car on cold mornings was just a waste of gas until my alternator froze up and left me stranded in a parking lot. Or how my buddy swore by sharpening his kitchen knives every week and I figured it was just a fussy thing until I tried to cut a tomato with a dull blade and ended up with pulp everywhere. Sometimes you just have to get burned before you see the fire, I guess.
