The whole "dead soil" thing gets thrown around a lot and honestly it's kind of misleading. Soil doesn't really die, it just gets worn out or packed down or loses the good stuff that keeps roots happy. In my experience with pothos, the bigger issue is when the mix stays wet too long and the roots rot, not some mysterious dead dirt situation. If the plant looks fine and puts out new leaves, your soil is probably doing its job. Next time you repot, just toss in some perlite and fresh potting mix and you'll be good. Your neighbor might not be wrong exactly, but don't let one comment make you rethink your whole setup.
