Showerthought: a retired mason on my crew said mortar should be like peanut butter, not cake batter, and I finally get it
He was talking about how he could tell a wall would hold by the way the trowel dragged through the mix at his 30 year mark. I switched my ratio on a garden wall in Boise and the joints stopped sagging for the first time all season. Now I'm wondering if anyone else was taught a food comparison for their mix, or was that just him?
