I finally called out my mom's 'fancy' pasta night for the budget trap it is
She buys those tiny jars of sauce and fresh herbs, which costs triple the canned stuff. Now we make big batches with store brand tomatoes and dry spices, and nobody can tell the difference.

My cousin tried to impress a date by making a fancy bolognese from a magazine. He spent forty dollars on special tomatoes from Italy. I accidentally used the cheap canned ones from my pantry when I made it last week, and my whole family said it was the best I ever made. It really showed me how much of that "good" taste is just in our heads.

Dunno, sometimes the cheap stuff is just as good. I mean, a box of wine works fine for cooking most of the time. But idk, maybe it's just me, but a really good olive oil does taste different from the basic stuff. Sometimes you pay for the name, but sometimes the pricey thing is actually better. It just depends.

Spent fifty bucks on fancy cheese for a grilled cheese... my friend said it tasted just like the cheap kind. Now I eat my pride with every bite.
