Found out hostel kitchens are goldmines for free food if you time it right

Last month I was in a hostel in New Orleans and noticed a bunch of people checking out left behind unopened pasta, rice, and spices on the counter. I asked the front desk and they said it's normal - travelers donate stuff they can't pack. I saved about $30 on groceries over 4 days just cooking with what was left. Anyone else found good scores this way?

Wait, hold on. You actually saved $30 on groceries just from leftover pasta and rice? That's wild. I've been in hostels a bunch of times and always figured that stuff was just trash or someone's gross experiment. Honestly, I'm kind of shocked people leave behind unopened spices too, that seems like a huge score. Ngl, I'm a little grossed out by the thought of eating someone else's random food though, even if it's sealed. But hey, $30 is $30, so maybe I'm the one missing out.

Right?! I used to think that was gross but now I'm totally converted.
