I finally hit 50 countries on a shoestring budget

Last month I landed in Albania and realized it was my 50th country. Never planned to hit that number, just kept finding cheap flights and couchsurfing options. Most of those trips cost under $500 each including food and lodging. The trick was always traveling during off season and staying with locals. Has anyone else accidentally crossed a milestone like that without meaning to?

Fifty countries and you never planned it? Sounds like my plan to eat one chip turned into finishing the whole bag. Guess that's one way to accidentally build a resume.

That chip analogy is perfect - it really does just snowball. For me, I started with one short trip and just kept saying yes to the next opportunity until it turned into a whole lifestyle.
