Pro tip: the $9 hostel breakfast in Lisbon taught me to stop eating at tourist spots
I was in Lisbon back in March and staying at a hostel near Rossio Square. On my second morning this older guy from Australia saw me about to walk out for breakfast and asked why I would pay 14 euros at a cafe when the hostel does eggs, bread, and coffee for 9. He said he has been traveling for 30 weeks a year for work and never eats within 3 blocks of a major landmark. I tried it, and he was right. Same food, half the price, and the people watching was better. Now I always ask the front desk where they eat, not where I should eat. Does anyone else have a rule like this for finding cheap meals in a new city?
