That $10 hostel in Chiang Mai had bed bugs but the owner's tip saved my trip
My buddy swears by booking the absolute cheapest bunk on Hostelworld, but after getting eaten alive for two nights in Chiang Mai, the owner told me to just throw my bag in a hot shower for 20 minutes and wash everything with dish soap, which actually killed the bugs and I saved $40 on laundry - has anyone else had a random local save them from a bad hostel pick?

The hot shower trick works but putting everything in a dryer on high heat for 30 minutes is even better, hostels usually let you use their dryers for free if you ask nice.

Wait, hostels just let you use their dryers for free if you ask nice? That's wild to me. Every hostel I've been to charged me like $3-5 for a dryer cycle, and some of them even had a card system that was impossible to figure out. I remember one place in Amsterdam that had a dryer that didn't even get hot, just blew room temperature air around for 45 minutes. Maybe I've just been unlucky or staying at the wrong hostels.
