Went from paying $80/night for motels to $30/night at hostels in Portugal last month

I always thought hostels were just for college kids and backpackers. But after burning through my travel budget on mediocre motels in Lisbon, I tried a hostel in Porto for the first time. Private room with a shared bathroom, free breakfast, and a kitchen I could use. Saved me like $350 over a week. Anyone else had a cheap accommodation type that surprised them?

Whoa, hold up. I get why you're excited about saving money but you're kinda missing the point. Hostels aren't just cheap places to crash. You're paying for shared bathrooms, thin walls, and a bunch of strangers coming and going at all hours. That's not a bargain, that's a headache waiting to happen. I'd rather pay extra for privacy and actual quiet.

Calling shared bathrooms a headache sounds like you've never actually stayed in a hostel.
