Absolutely, a dirty chain is a disaster waiting to happen. My cousin ignored a rusty chain on his old ten-speed for way too long. It finally gave out while he was pedaling hard up a hill. The chain snapped, the pedals spun free, and he nearly ate the pavement. He had to push that bike three miles home in the rain. What a miserable way to learn that lesson, right?
