Rant: My grocery store trip last Saturday wrecked my whole food budget

Stood in the checkout line at Kroger for 20 minutes watching my total climb because I kept grabbing snacks I didn't need. How do you guys stop the impulse buys when you're hungry and tired?

Read something interesting about this - a nutritionist said if you shop hungry your brain literally craves more calories because it thinks you're in survival mode. I started eating a banana or a handful of almonds before I leave the house and it makes a real difference. Also, I heard this trick about using the pickup option at Kroger. You shop online, add stuff to your cart, and by the time you finish the list you've usually deleted half the junk because you're not staring at a bag of chips. Saves me like $30 a trip. Your mileage may vary but it's worth a shot.

The survival mode thing really clicked for me. I used to think that was just some excuse people made to justify eating junk but honestly, I tried shopping hungry last week and came home with a family size bag of takis and a frozen pizza i didn't even want. The banana trick sounds so simple but i bet it works. And that Kroger pickup hack is genius, i never thought of it that way. I always add random stuff to my cart then feel dumb when i check out, but building the list online first lets me be real with myself before I pay.
