A framer in Nashville made me rethink my whole measuring process
He watched me mark a stud wall twice and said 'you're measuring twice because you don't trust your first cut, not because you're careful.' I switched to a story pole after that job and my waste dropped from about 15% to maybe 5%. Anyone else ditch the tape for layout sticks on repetitive work?

The 2x4 in that story pole trick is solid, but I gotta push back on the waste math. Going from 15% to 5% on framing lumber is a huge jump, and most of that waste comes from bad cuts on angles and notches, not from measuring a stud wall twice. A story pole helps with repetitive layout, sure, but it won't fix a miter saw that's off by a degree or a beam that's warped. I've seen guys use poles for years and still chunk out 10% because they're rushing the cut itself. The real win is what that framer said about trust, but it's about trusting your saw setup, not just your marks. You still gotta check square and plumb on every wall, pole or no pole.
