Bought a $23 magnetic stud finder, and my living room shelf is now a work of modern art
Last Saturday I wanted to hang two floating shelves in my apartment in Portland, so I grabbed a cheap magnetic stud finder from the hardware store down the street. It kept snapping to every screw in the drywall and I found zero studs, so I just drilled where the magnet stuck hardest. Long story short, the shelf is now crooked and holding up a single picture frame at a 15 degree tilt. My girlfriend calls it "abstract shelving." Did I get a lemon, or am I just using the wrong tool for old plaster walls?
