Shoutout to the guy at the lumber yard who told me to soak my cedar fence pickets overnight before staining them.
I was getting terrible, uneven absorption on my project in Tacoma, but after letting them sit in a kiddie pool for 12 hours, the stain went on perfectly smooth and has lasted 5 years without a single patchy spot.

That trick works for pressure-treated wood too.

Yeah that line about pressure-treated wood made me realize something. So many life hacks for one thing actually work for a bunch of other stuff too. It's like we learn a trick in one narrow situation and never test it elsewhere. I see it with cleaning products, cooking, even fixing stuff around the house. We get stuck in a single-use mindset and miss out on easier solutions.
