Found a jar of 400 old campaign buttons at an estate sale in Toledo for $15
Stopped at an estate sale on Saturday in Toledo and found a mason jar packed with old campaign pins from the 60s and 70s. Most are rusted on the back but about 200 of them are still in good enough shape to press new backs on. I paid $15 for the whole jar, which works out to under 8 cents a pin. My plan is to clean them up with a soft toothbrush and reuse the fronts with new pin backs from my stash. Has anyone here ever rehabbed rusty old pins before, and does the vinegar soak trick actually work or does it eat the finish?
Under 8 cents a pin is a steal, assuming you don't count the hours of scrubbing rust with a toothbrush as your new part time job. Vinegar does work but it'll strip the finish if you leave them in too long, so check them every few minutes instead of walking away. Honestly for 15 bucks you could just keep the rusty ones as is and tell people the wear is "vintage character.
