Why does everyone rave about silicone mats for pin backs? I call foul

I pressed 200 pins last week for a craft fair in Denver and every single backing would not snap on straight using that popular silicone mat trick. Took me 4 extra hours to hand set each one with pliers. All the forum posts made it sound like a miracle, but my batch still had crooked edges. Has anyone actually measured their press pressure versus mat thickness, or are we all just chasing a trend?
