I thought the toner probe thing was a gimmick until a job in Mesa proved me wrong
I always ran tone with the cheap wand that came in my first kit and figured the fancy probe with the amplifier was just a way to sell installers a $90 toy. Then I spent 3 hours in a Mesa apartment building trying to trace a line through a bundle of 60 cat5s that all hummed at the same level on my old wand. The office manager finally let me borrow their probe, and I had the right pair in under two minutes because I could dial the gain down until only one cable sang. I bought my own that night and eat crow on it. Anybody else got a tool they laughed at first and now won't leave the van without?
Wait, 60 cat5s in one bundle all humming at the same level? That sounds like an actual nightmare. I would have lost my mind after hour one, let alone three. The part that gets me is the office manager just casually having a probe better than yours sitting in a drawer somewhere. How did you not know that thing existed before this? I'm half tempted to go buy one right now just from reading this.
