Spent 4 hours cleaning a Nikkor 50mm with Q-tips before a guy in Chicago asked if I checked the rear element first
Turns out I'd been scrubbing the front element for nothing while a single smudge on the back glass was causing all the haze, so now I always flip the lens over first, anyone else learn this the hard way?
That line about scrubbing the front element for nothing really hits home. I did the same thing with an old 135mm, spent a whole evening on the front glass with a flashlight and a bad attitude, and the haze never budged. The smudge was on the rear element the entire time, just sitting there laughing at me. The rear glass is so easy to forget because you barely look at it when the lens is mounted. Now I check both ends before I touch anything, and I hold the lens up to a lamp first to see where the problem actually is.
