That repair shop owner told me my shutter cleaning was too rough

Last Tuesday a seasoned repair guy in Brooklyn watched me work on a Nikon F2 and said I was scrubbing the shutter curtains like a dirty grill. He showed me his method of using a single drop of lighter fluid on a Q-tip, barely touching the cloth. Anyone else had to unlearn aggressive cleaning habits from their early days?

Seems like overthinking it, cloth curtains aren't that fragile.

Yeah but "not that fragile" doesn't mean they don't need maintenance... I actually read somewhere that even thick cloth curtains trap dust and allergens way worse than you'd think. A friend of mine never washed hers for like two years and they started smelling musty when the heat came on. Plus the sun fades them unevenly if you don't rotate or clean them regularly. So maybe overthinking for some people but not if you want them to last.
