Question about sleeping pad R values, a guy at REI in Boise laughed at my setup and I can't let it go
So I walked into the REI in Boise last month to grab a new sleeping pad because I was freezing my butt off on a 28 degree night in the Sawtooths. I had my old pad, which I thought was fine, and this employee looks at it and says "that thing is basically a yoga mat with a logo on it." He pulled up a chart on his phone and showed me my pad was rated R 1.3, and he said for cold ground you want at least R 4, ideally 5 or 6. I felt like a total dummy standing there holding it in front of like 5 other shoppers. I get that he was trying to help but did he have to say it loud enough for the whole aisle? Ended up buying a pad with an R value of 4.5 and I slept way better, but now I'm second guessing every piece of gear I own. Has anyone else had a store employee roast their setup like that?
Getting called out in front of a crowd sucks but the guy did you a solid. I had the same thing happen with my old pad and once I checked the R value it all made sense. Don't second guess everything you own, just check the ratings on the stuff that matters for cold nights.
