I think the push for constant networking is overrated

Last month, I had a really bad Tuesday where I forced myself to go to three different online meetups after work. I was exhausted and didn't make a single real connection. The next day, I skipped a planned event and just focused on finishing a project. That focus led to a clean piece of work that my boss showed to a client, which actually got me a small bonus. Everyone says you need to be out there all the time, but for me, quiet skill-building has opened more doors. Has anyone else found that stepping back from the networking grind helped their career more?

Three online meetups in one night sounds like a special kind of torture. I can't believe you even made it through the first one.

Totally feel that "special kind of torture" line. My buddy Dave tried to do two back-to-back gaming clan meetings last week. He was a zombie by the second one, just staring at his screen while people argued about raid schedules. He said it felt like his brain was melting. He swore off scheduling anything after 8pm now. Some people just pack too much into one night.

Notice this happens with hobbies too. People burn out trying to optimize every minute for progress. Sometimes just doing the work without the showmanship gets better results.
