My uncle told me to take the $16/hr help desk job over the $19/hr warehouse one, and 4 months in I get why
Back in March I had two offers sitting on my kitchen table in Mesa and I was ready to take the warehouse gig because it paid 3 bucks more an hour. My uncle Dana, who has done IT at a hospital for 20 odd years, told me the money was a trap and to take the help desk spot even though it felt like a step down. Four months later I have a free CompTIA voucher, a manager who actually trains me, and a path to $55k while my buddy who took the warehouse job is still scanning boxes at night. Did anyone else here take a pay cut to get their foot in the door, and how long did it take before the money caught up?
Saw a video from a career guy saying the first IT job is basically paid training, and that tracks with what your uncle told you. My cousin did the same thing, took a pay cut at a call center doing tickets and got his A+ on their dime. Took him about a year and a half before he passed what he was making before, but now he's way past it.
