Talked to a senior dev at lunch and it flipped my whole approach to career growth

I was grabbing lunch at a deli near the office in Austin and ended up sitting next to this guy Mike who's been a dev for like 20 years. He told me he never chased promotions or titles, just focused on solving the hardest problems nobody wanted. It hit different because I've been stressing about getting a senior title by 30 and he basically said that's the wrong goal. Has anyone else had a random conversation that made you rethink your whole career plan?

Mike's advice is solid. Becoming the go-to problem solver paid off way more than chasing titles.

That "focus on solving the hardest problems" thing is basically the same pattern I see at the hardware store near my place. The old guy who knows exactly which bolt fits a weird pipe gets called back way more than the guy with the fanciest tool belt. It's the same deal in every field. Being the person people come to when they're stuck is a better job security than any title.
