Question about squaring a deck frame: I finally gave up on the 3-4-5 trick
For the past 6 years I swore by pulling a 3-4-5 triangle on every deck frame I built, and I'd still argue with anyone who said different. Last Tuesday I was framing a 16x20 in Boise and my diagonal was off by a half inch no matter how many times I checked, so I finally dug out the $22 string line and just measured corner to corner instead. Turns out the 3-4-5 gets you close but it drifts when your mudsill isn't dead flat, and those two diagonals caught a 5/8 inch rack I never would have found. Anyone here still using the triangle method on long runs, or did you all switch over too?
