Saw a builder in Nashville pre-drill every single hole, even for nails

I was helping a buddy frame a shed outside Nashville last spring. This older carpenter on site wouldn't drive a single nail without pre-drilling first, even into regular pine studs. He told me it keeps the wood from splitting and saves him from coming back to fix mistakes later. I always thought it was a waste of time, but now I pre-drill for any finish work too. Anybody else pick up a weird habit from watching someone work?

Pre drilling for nails always seemed like overkill to me too, but I picked up the weird habit of checking the grain direction on every piece of wood before I cut it. There was this old timer I worked with once who would spend a solid minute spinning a 2x4 around in his hands before making a single cut, just to see twists and wane. I always laughed it off until I rushed a job and the thing warped sideways on me the next day. Now I can't help but spin everything like I'm some kind of lumber sommelier or something lol. It's funny how those little rituals stick with you once you've seen the payoff firsthand.

Three minutes on a 2x4 sounds like a lot of drama for a piece of wood.
