Am I the only one who realized their compost bin was a methane factory for 2 years straight?

I had my compost pile jammed in a shady corner with no airflow, throwing in grass clippings and kitchen scraps without layering in browns. Then my neighbor showed me his pile that was actually hot and didn't stink, and I saw mine was just rotting into sludge instead of breaking down. What made you finally realize one of your daily habits was actually making things worse for the climate?
