Appreciation post: my town put a rain garden in the cul-de-sac and I almost voted against it
Two years ago our little city in Ohio put a rain garden right at the end of my street, and I showed up to the council meeting ready to fight it. I was picking option A, plain grass and a storm drain, over option B, a big pit full of native plants, because I figured it would look like a weed patch. They went with the garden anyway, 9 to 2 on the vote, and I grumbled about it for a whole summer. Then we got 4 inches of rain in one afternoon last June, and my basement stayed dry for the first time since we moved in back in 2011. The neighbor two doors down, who has the same house layout, got about 6 inches of water in his. Turns out that pit soaks up thousands of gallons and takes the pressure off the whole block. Now I walk past it and feel like a jerk for ever being against it. Has anyone else watched one of these small green upgrades actually do something they could measure?

My neighbor fought a bioswale on our street too, then his crawlspace dried up and he stopped complaining.
