Composted 412 pounds of food scraps this year instead of tossing them
Kept a little tally on my fridge after I got a countertop bin last January, and it blew my mind that my coffee grounds and banana peels added up to more than my body weight, so now I'm wondering what the rest of you do with scraps if you don't have outdoor space for a pile.
Banana peels are mostly water but they still break down and add bulk to the bin, so the tally holds up fine. For small spaces a worm bin under the sink works great, worms eat the scraps and you get castings for plants, just skip meat and dairy or it gets gross fast like @lucas972 probably knows. If worms freak you out, a bokashi bucket ferments everything in a sealed container and you just bury the results later or toss them in a green bin if your city has one.
