Why does nobody talk about how a $45 rain barrel cut my water bill
I bought a 50 gallon rain barrel for $45 from a hardware store in Cincinnati back in April, mostly as an experiment. I hooked it to my downspout and used it for the garden all summer instead of dragging the hose around. My water bill for July and August came in at $31 each, which is about $12 less than the same stretch the year before. The whole thing paid for itself already, and I'm honestly mad I waited so long. Has anyone set up more than one of these, and did you bother linking them together or just run them separate?
Set up two of them at my buddy's place last spring after he saw my setup and got jealous. He ran them separate for a month then linked them with a short piece of hose at the bottom so the second one fills once the first is full. Worked way better than he expected, and he said the linked setup kept him from having to switch the hose over every time. One thing he learned the hard way is you gotta put them on blocks or they sink into the mud and you lose the spigot height. He also covers the top with window screen to keep mosquitoes out, which is probably the most important part if you ask me. $45 is a steal, most places around here want $70 or more for the same size.
