Update: spent 3 weeks chasing a chatter problem that turned out to be one loose chuck jaw
Had a weird chatter show up on my old Haas lathe about 3 weeks back, only on finish passes above 800 rpm, and it drove me nuts trying to track it down. I swapped inserts, dialed in speeds and feeds, even re-leveled the machine twice thinking the floor pad had shifted. Turned out jaw number 3 on the chuck was loose by maybe a quarter turn, and it only showed up when the part got warm and grew a few tenths. Pulled the chuck apart on a Saturday morning, cleaned the serrations, torqued everything to spec, and the chatter was gone. Anybody got a go-to routine for checking jaw torque before a run, or do you just catch it when it bites you?
Reminds me of the time my tailstock was drifting a hair and I blamed the tool post for a week straight. Funny how the gremlins always hide in the spot you check last.
