I watched my friend try to learn Python by copying code line for line
He spent three whole weeks just copying projects from YouTube without typing anything himself. When he tried to make his own small program, he couldn't even start. I told him he needs to actually write the code, even if it's wrong at first, because that's how your brain learns the patterns. It's like trying to learn guitar by only watching someone else's fingers. Has anyone else seen beginners get stuck in this copy-paste trap and how did you help them break out of it?

Yeah, the guitar comparison is spot on. I did the same thing when I started, just copying tutorials. I felt like a genius until I had a blank file staring back at me. My first real project was a total mess of errors, but that's where things finally clicked. You have to get comfortable being bad at it first.

Honestly I used to think copying tutorials was just part of the real learning process, not a crutch. But yeah, that blank page or empty file moment really humbles you fast lol. You're right though, being bad at it first is the only way to actually get good.

My friend tried to learn Spanish last year. She aced all the app lessons, but froze up trying to order a coffee in Madrid. It's like that with everything. You can't just follow steps, you have to actually do the messy thing. I see it with my kid's homework too, he can copy math problems perfectly but gets lost making up his own.
