Doubted the French press for years, but my friend's camping setup changed my mind

I always thought French press coffee was just muddy and gross. Last summer my buddy brought a cheap $15 one on a camping trip in the Smokies. He used a medium grind and let it steep exactly 4 minutes before pressing slowly. I took a sip and it was actually clean and smooth, not bitter at all. Has anyone else had a specific method or tool that flipped your opinion on something?

Camping gear always hits different somehow. Coffee just tastes better outside.
