My espresso machine almost caught fire last night

I was pulling shots at 9pm in my kitchen in Portland when I smelled something burning. I looked over and saw smoke coming from the back of my Gaggia where the wiring goes into the boiler. Turns out a loose screw had been arcing for weeks and melted the plastic housing. I unplugged it fast and called a repair guy this morning. Has anyone else had electrical issues with older machines?

Dude same thing happened with my Gaggia last year. That melted plastic smell is awful.

Honestly used to think people were being dramatic about the fire risk with these machines. Thought it was just a scare tactic from the repair guys trying to upsell you. But after reading your post and Miles comment I totally get it now. That arcing from a loose screw can happen so slow you don't even notice until it's too late. Makes me want to check the wiring on my own machine this weekend. Better safe than sorry with something that runs water and electricity together.
