Pro tip: Stop rinsing your beans before grinding

I used to rinse my coffee beans under water to get rid of dust, until I tried it side by side with a dry grind last week. The rinsed batch brewed way weaker and tasted flat, like it lost all the oils. Has anyone else messed up their morning cup this way?

Yep, that's gonna strip all the good stuff right off the beans. Water and coffee oils don't mix, so you're basically washing away flavor before you even brew. I've seen people do this thinking it's like rinsing rice or something, but it's totally different. Just grind dry and let your grinder catch any chaff or dust, that's all you need.

That phrase "like rinsing rice" really hits the nail on the head. I've noticed this same kind of well-meaning but wrong thinking pop up all over, @rowanp15. People see a dry ingredient and assume it needs a wash, but they don't stop to think if that actually helps or just hurts the end result. It reminds me of folks who over-wash cast iron pans with soap, stripping off all that seasoned non-stick layer, thinking they're being thorough when they're really just making more work for themselves later.
