Unpopular opinion: I think the whole 'color of the year' thing is a trap for new designers
Three years ago in my first graphic design job, I spent a whole week redoing a cafe's branding to match that year's 'Living Coral'... The owner took one look and said it looked like a kid's juice box. Last month, I saw a local bakery chase 'Viva Magenta' and their social media engagement dropped by half. It just feels like chasing trends instead of thinking about what actually works for the space and the brand... Has anyone else had a client get burned by following these yearly colors too closely?

Oh man, the juice box cafe is perfect. I saw a hardware store try to use that "Very Peri" a couple years back. They painted an accent wall and everything. Looked like a sad unicorn threw up in a place that sells socket wrenches. It's like these colors get picked by people who have never had to sell a sandwich or a cup of coffee to a real person. They just pick something that looks cool in a vacuum and then everyone scrambles to make their whole life that color for twelve months.

Ever wonder why these colors feel so wrong in real places? I used to think it was just bad taste, but now I see it's a total mismatch between a trendy idea and actual daily life. That disconnect is what makes a hardware store look so silly with a unicorn color.

@miller.susan nailed it, these colors ignore the smell and sound of real places.
