My train map redesign failed on a gray November commute

I made a new route map for the downtown Portland transit blog with bright teal and orange lines, but a colorblind reader at the stop next to me couldn't tell which platform went where. He pointed out the two colors looked nearly identical under the station's fluorescent lights, which I never tested for. Has anyone else had luck using patterns or line thickness alongside color for transit maps?

Three stations on the old MBTA maps used dashed lines for the Green Line branches and it worked fine for decades. Patterns help, but line thickness alone might not save you if the colors are that close under crappy lighting.
