Pattern vs. color coding in our warehouse labels, what a difference

We re-labeled 400 bins at our shop last month. Before, everything was color coded, red for returns, blue for special orders, that sort of thing. One of our guys who has deuteranopia kept grabbing the wrong parts, maybe 3 times a week. I finally spent an afternoon printing new labels with small diagonal stripes for returns and dots for special orders, plus the color as a backup. He hasn't messed up once in 3 weeks now. The funny part is the boss was against it at first, said stripes looked too busy. Then he watched us pull an order in half the time and shut up. Has anyone else tried mixing patterns with colors on physical tags, or is it just us?
