Warm vs cool reds, my whole palette was off for months

I kept using red and green together for status bars at work, thought it was fine. Then a buddy with deuteranopia told me both colors looked identical to him on my screen. I swapped the green status to a blue/purple combo and added a little icon next to it. Took like 20 minutes to test with a free simulator and honestly it felt way more obvious once I saw the confusion. Anyone else have a moment where a colorblind friend just casually wrecked your whole design?

Wait, did you try any of those browser extensions that let you preview your mockups in different color blindness modes? Cause that was my total turning point, honestly. I had a similar thing happen with a client who kept saying my color choices felt muddy and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out I was basically relying on red vs green to carry all my meaning in a dashboard. I started adding texture and patterns to my data visualizations, like diagonal stripes for one category and dots for another. That way even if someone sees the colors as the same, they can still tell the groups apart. I also got in the habit of running every design through a quick grayscale check, if it doesn't work in black and white, I know I'm leaning too hard on color alone. It feels like a pain at first but now it's just part of my normal process and saves me from those awkward "wait, these are different colors?" conversations.
