Finally figured out how to keep my umbilical from snagging on the ladder
Last Tuesday I was doing a hull inspection in 40 feet of murky water and my umbilical kept catching on the ladder rungs every time I turned, which was eating up my air and my patience. I started clipping a small carabiner to my harness D-ring and running the hose through it so it stays tight to my body, and it stopped snagging completely. Has anyone else tried something like this, or do you just deal with the drag?
Running the hose through a carabiner is smart but you might be trading one problem for another. That D-ring clip point becomes a hard bend in the umbilical right where it flexes the most, and over time the outer jacket will wear through at that spot. I've seen it happen on comm lines that were zip tied tight. Better to use a loose loop of bungee or a length of surgical tubing so the hose can still slide a little when you turn. Keeps it close to your body without pinching it against a fixed point.
