Took four hours to change a simple valve on a pipeline job
I was always the guy who thought I could eyeball things and just get it done fast. But last month on a job in Port Arthur, I ran into a stuck ball valve that should have taken 30 minutes. It took me and my tender four hours to realize the pipe had shifted an eighth of an inch from thermal expansion. Has anyone else had a simple job turn into a whole day because of something small like that?

The thermal expansion thing gets me every time. Now I always let the line sit a bit before I start wrenching on it, especially after lunch.

Man, you know I used to just go at it right after the morning startup. Honest, I thought thermal expansion was one of those things old-timers worried about for no reason. Then I had a brass fitting crack on me last June, right around 2 pm after a hot morning. Had to replace the whole section. Now I wait at least ten minutes after the line has been sitting in the sun, especially if I've been driving it hard. Your lunch example makes total sense, the metal's already warm from the engine bay heat plus the road. Simple stuff but it saves a headache.
