Poured a 40x40 shop slab in Lubbock and screed setup time went from 4 hours to 45 minutes
I never used to think about my screed stakes at all, just pounding them in wherever and moving on. Two summers ago I did a 30x50 pour outside Amarillo and spent almost 4 hours just setting and re-leveling stakes because I kept knocking them loose with the bull float. Last month on a 40x40 shop slab in Lubbock I tried setting them 24 inches in from the edge instead of right at the form and bracing every third one with a diagonal stake. Cut my setup down to 45 minutes and the concrete was way more consistent at the edges. Same crew, same tools, only thing that changed was where the stakes went. The old guy who taught me always said stake placement was 'for the guy pouring, not the guy screeding' and I finally get what he meant. Anybody else have a stake spacing rule they swear by for shop slabs?

Buddy of mine did almost the same thing on a shop pour in Midland, moved his stakes in about 20 inches and braced every other one. Said the screed just floated across way smoother, no more fighting the low spots. His old foreman gave him hell for it at first, then started doing it on his own jobs.
