Just realized my site went from 9 RFIs a week to 2 after one small change on the submittal log
Six months ago I was buried in RFIs on a 40,000 sq ft school addition in Mesa. We were averaging 9 a week, every week, and I kept blaming the subs and the architect. Then our new PE asked if she could add a simple column to the submittal log that showed the date each submittal got sent back with comments. That was it. Nothing fancy, just a date cell and a note on who reviewed it. Within eight weeks we were down to 2 RFIs a week. Turns out half our RFIs were guys asking about stuff that was already answered in a submittal that got reviewed and returned but nobody told the field. The info was sitting in a PDF on someone's laptop the whole time. She started sending a one line email every Friday with the submittals closed that week and the crews actually read it. I used to blow off submittal tracking as paperwork duty, now I check it before I check my own email. Has anyone else seen their RFI count drop just from fixing how submittal status gets shared? I want to know if this holds up on bigger jobs or if it was just luck on this one.

A simple column" and suddenly RFIs drop from 9 to 2? Idk man, that sounds too clean. Half your RFIs were guys asking about stuff already answered in a submittal nobody told them about? So the fix was a Friday email and a date cell? Maybe, but RFIs usually come from real conflicts, missing details, or stuff that doesn't match up, not just lazy field guys. I'd want to see if it holds up past the first couple months once everyone stops reading those Friday emails.
