My uncle the retired GC told me to over-order lumber by 10% and it saved my butt on a job last month
We were short 4 studs on a framing job in Austin because the lumberyard messed up our order, but that extra 10% he made me keep in the trailer covered it. Has anyone else had a weird piece of advice from an older builder that actually paid off?

Respectfully disagree, that 10% overage just becomes waste more often than not.

Actually I just saw this video from a contractor explaining how he calculates exactly 5% overage and his waste almost never goes above that. He said the key is measuring twice and using the exact layout before buying materials. The 10% thing is definitely old school where people just guess instead of planning properly.
