Stopped fighting the rust, now I use it as a design feature
I spent 2 months sanding and repainting one 40ft container in Fresno and it still looked like crap after a wet spring. Finally gave up and let a section corrode naturally, then sealed it with clear matte epoxy. The orange streaks actually break up the boxy look way better than any siding I could have added. Anyone else lean into patina instead of chasing pristine metal?

The clear matte epoxy trick is smart, but here's something nobody mentions: rust is basically a time capsule. That orange color actually matches the iron oxide in the local soil out there, so it blends the whole setup into the landscape instead of fighting it. Plus, if you ever sell the place, that patina tells a story about the weather and the years, which some buyers honestly find cooler than a boring fresh coat. Just make sure you hit any spots where water pools, cause that's where the rust eats through fast, not just surface stains.
