Thought variable fonts were overkill for my 4 weight icon set, then a user asked for a thin version
I had hand-drawn 4 weights as separate SVG files and figured that was fine for a set of 60 icons. When someone asked for a 100 weight to match their body text, I redid the whole thing as a variable font with one axis and the total file went from 340kb down to 28kb. Anyone else make the switch and have tips for keeping the interpolation clean at the extremes?
340kb to 28kb for 60 icons seems like a lot of savings for something nobody was really complaining about. I've hand-drawn sets of 80 plus icons at 3 weights and shipping all the files together never broke 200kb even before gzip. Maybe worth it if you plan to add more weights later, but calling it a big win for one person asking for thin feels like a stretch.
