A librarian in Omaha handed me a 3x5 index card and it changed how I write prompts
I was at a small writing workshop at the Omaha public library back in March, mostly to get out of the house on a Saturday. The librarian running it passed out index cards and told us to write one setting, one object, and one problem before we wrote anything else. I filled out my card with a hospital waiting room, a broken watch, and a sister who won't speak. That one card turned into a 2,000 word short story I finished in 4 days, which is fast for me. Now I keep a stack of cards on my desk and fill out 3 before I start any prompt, even the silly ones. It keeps me from staring at a blank page for 20 minutes. Does anyone else use a warm up step like this before they dig into a prompt?
