Blew $600 on a "dark mode audit" tool that just flipped my colors and called it done
Two years ago I paid a guy in Portland $600 to make my app's dark theme better. He ran it through some script that swapped white backgrounds for black and flipped my text to white. That was it. No contrast checks, no shadow fixes, nothing. My blue buttons turned into this ugly purple mush and my card borders disappeared into the background. Now I just do it by hand with a contrast checker and my own eyes. Anyone else get burned by a tool that promised way more than it did?
Honestly that script did exactly what you paid for since real dark mode work is way more than any automated tool can handle. Expecting a $600 script to catch contrast ratios and shadow layering is like expecting a spell checker to fix your story's plot. Doing it by hand with a contrast checker is just what good design work looks like, not some failure of the tool.
