Can we talk about that coffee shop in Denver that made me rethink dark mode forever?
I was sitting in a coffee shop in Denver three months ago, working on a dark theme for a client's app, and the barista handed me a cup with a bright white sleeve. It hit me right in the eyes, even though my screen was dim. That got me thinking: should dark mode always be about low light, or should it also protect us from sudden bright spots in the real world? Some folks say dark mode is just a trend and you should stick to system settings, but others argue it's about comfort and eye health. I'm torn because I've seen apps that look great in dark mode but then a white popup blinds you. Where do you draw the line between following the trend and actually designing for real life situations? I'd love to hear what you all think after your own experiences.
