I compared flat blacks to layered grays on my portfolio site, no contest

Rebuilt my portfolio over the weekend and tested pure #000 against a layered gray palette on the same layout. The solid black made everything look crushed and harsh, but the grays kept depth without feeling washed out. Am I missing something, or do you all avoid true black in your dark themes too?

Solid black making everything look crushed" is basically my life's motto, I use flat black so much my last portfolio looked like a void. Layered grays are just fancy shadows for the rest of us who can't commit.
